Things That Don’t Belong in the Trash

The trash can is not the answer for all your waste needs. Some items are best fit in recycling while others do not belong in either. Let’s dig into things that don’t belong in the trash that we get asked about and what you should do with them.

Things That Don't Belong In The Trash

Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries do not belong in the trash. They can cause trash fires in garbage trucks, trash stations, landfills, you name it. Once you crush a lithium battery, that chemical mixture can start a fire. This very hot fire is nearly impossible to put out and is very hard to contain. This is why we encourage keeping lithium batteries out of the trash, garbage trucks and out of the landfill.

Tires

Tires are a common thing our customers need to get rid of. How do you get rid of tires properly? At Sweetman Sanitation we can dispose of tires, however, they cannot go in your regular trash. We can come pick them up and take them at a minimal cost. If this is a service you need, contact us.

Wet Paint

Another item that does not belong in the trash is wet paint. Often there is no fee to get rid of paint, however, you need to get rid of it in the right spot. Wet paint cannot go to the landfill as it is hazardous waste. If the dried paint was on a wall or on a piece of cardboard, that is fine. Those materials can go in the trash. But if it is wet paint it needs to be properly disposed of.

Places to Get Rid of Hazardous Waste

If you need to get rid of old lithium batteries or wet paint, these items can be taken out to your local household hazardous waste facility. Check out the links to the three different local Household Hazardous Waste Facility. We at Sweetman Sanitation can help you dispose of the proper way. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us and we will help connect you with which location is the closest for you.
